From beginner to advanced white water there are courses to cater for all abilities, and with very low student to coach ratio's your development is guaranteed.

The Courses

The 3 star award indicates you can be considered an intermediate paddler and competent member of a group to be led in moderate water environments .

On the course we will concentrate on giving you the personal skills to efficiently paddle on simple moving water and open water conditions.

By the end of the course your personal paddling will have improved and you will be confident in ability to be led in these environments.

As well as improving your paddling technique, we will build your traditional skills such as tracking, lining, poling and sailing.

Although we will give you the understanding of the standard required to pass your three star award – our main aim on this course is to make you a better paddler!

Training is intentionally over five days, so that we can give each skill adequate focus as opposed to lip service.

The five days training includes accommodation and will have a Bivvy out for a night. Food is not included but everything else is, eg use of kit and any water/car park fees etc.

Formerly known as the 4 Star Canoe award, this 2 day course will fine tune your personal skills on grade 2 water and ensure that you are effective with dealing with wind on open water.

It's also a qualification which will enable you to lead groups safely in these environments.

Rest assured we do not try to catch you out and we know the level of each of the awards intimately – so no horror stories!!

We consider all assessments to be further learning and whilst giving you a fair assessment conducted in a professional manner, we hope you go away with lots of new ideas and ways to progress with your paddling further.

Our assessments are based in the Corwen area of North Wales.

Before booking make sure you have the necessary pre-requisites including registering with an LR form with your Home Nation (Canoe England, Canoe Wales, SCA, CANI, BCUNA) Candidates should allow two weeks to complete the registration process. Click here for more information.

Remember with all Leader assessments your logbook is an integral part of your assessment.

Covering all aspects of the BC Advanced Canoe Leader syllabus. Formerly known as the 5 Star Canoe Award.

This award is designed for BC Coaches who hold a 4* leader award and wish to introduce paddlers to the moderate water environment.

This is a great award to take your Level 2 coaching skills into a more dynamic environment. It also allows you register to become a three star assessor in the chosen discipline.

We run this course as a one day training, then one day assessment – take a look at the prerequisites below, if you have all the training ones in place you can do the training and assessment over two consecutive days – get in touch if you need advice.

Prerequisites (for training):

Candidates will require the following prerequisites:

  • BCU Moderate Water Registration (CR Form)
  • BCU UKCC Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Paddlesport
  • BCU 4 Star Leader Award Canoe
  • Be 18 Years Old or Older
  • Hold a recognised 8 hr first aid award

Prerequisites (for assessment):

Candidates will require the following prerequisites:

  • Training completed
  • A minimum of 10 logged coaching hours in the sheltered water environment post holding BCU UKCC Level 2
  • A minimum of 20 leading hours in the specific moderate water environment, post holding 4 star. (divided into 10 hours leading journeys on lakes/lochs in moderate water conditions and 10 hours on moving water).

Whitewater - Fine Tuned & Flawless. Aimed at the experienced white water paddler who wants to be more accurate, consistant and fluid.

There are a lot of paddlers who say they run grade 3/4, which means they chuck themselves down a line and hope for the best. This course will not only give you river reading skills but will also give you skills to initiate your game plans with accuracy, pin pointing boat positions and angles and when, how and where to use your paddle.

You will walk away from this course with lots of confidence and have an insight into your potential. Recommended to anyone keen to up their game, have a trip abroad or just to become a slicker paddler.
