PEAK UK River Guide Vest Review
Over the last ten years I have worn the PEAK UK River Guide Vest, whilst coaching and providing Safety and rescue course it has never let me down! So when Peak launched the updateed vest made to conform to the new ISO standards I was keen to get in one and check the PFD I know and love was still in there!
What better way to test the kit than whilst delivering a WWS+R for Getafix in north Wales.
ISO Approval is the replacement for the CE or Central European Mark and Peak is the first manufacturer to release a full range of ISO compliant PFD’s.
I was pleased to see that the High performance cut of the vest was still there, once on and in the water I quickly realized my old PFD was destined for the Bin, Peak have improved the cut and fitting system, swimming and paddling both felt great especially considering the 50-70N of self moulding soft foam. . The rip stop Cordura shell took the scrapes and the neoprene shoulders and sides moved and flexed with my body.
Shoulder, waist and side straps all worked to keep the PFD in place and at the end of a full day of swimming and paddling I hadn’t had to tighten a strap once.
Double front Cordura / mesh zip pocket with gear clips were both of a good size and easily accessible with cold hands, plenty of storage space with out interfering with climbing back in to a boat or paddling.
I hadn’t initially realized it was there but over lunch I found an Inner mesh zip pocket, this was great for storing soft rescue items and that handy waterproof camera!
The removable harness was excellent, it felt strong and reliable and once in the water pressure was nicely spread across the PFD, it was easy to release both left and right handed (and with a plume of water over my head! thanks Leo). The Included throw line belt worked well with all makes of throw line but worked best with the Peak lines it was solid when needed and quick to release when I needed that line.
I didn’t think any manufacturer would manage to peel my much-loved River vest off my back, but Pete at Peak has managed it!
